.

In late experiments, it quickly demonstrated itself superior to any technology that we would otherwise consider leading-edge. Bd7 Thanks for sharing.

How long will it take until LC0 is as strong as Alpha Zero? A0 did some deep calculation. But the output is limited.

I'd like to see what A0 plays against 1. Then I could better analyze what's going on. I read the BBC article. The human race is doomed, I tell ya, doomed! Just kidding. I think it is an overreaction by the Go master to retire. AphaZero hasn't destroyed human chess. I'm not aware of chess grandmasters retiring because of AI. An argument can be made that AI is enhancing human chess play--and can enhance human Go play.

I was thinking, when Deep Blue beat Kasparov, he basically accused IBM of cheating -- they must have wondered if their investment in computer chess was worth the heartache. Stockfish, Tord Romstad et al. There are countless youtube videos with excellent analysis too. My question is, did Alpha Zero discover and new chess principles? What I mean by that is, have we discovered any new chess principles based on Alpha Zero's surprising play? Are there any positions in any of the games where AZ played a move that no one would have guessed, yet it proves to be the strongest move, and the reason we wouldn't guess it?

Some moves may just be surprising because of the depth of calculation, but I'm not talking about those moves, obviously. I'm talking about the part of the game where principles can guide our play, whether it's in the opening, middle game or ending. New chess principles? Before AlphaGo, Go players often showed the "supremacy" of their game to chess precisely based on the computer performance in both: chess went far past humans, while in Go, before AlphaGo, no machine could beat even the strongest amateurs, let alone best humans in the world.

It went so far that Go players declared their game to be fundamentally different from chess and requiring both brain hemispheres while chess allegedly used only the left brain. And, because of this, Go being "uncomputable". AlphaGo destroyed this theory. With AlphaGo, the feeling of being special that motivated so many Go players went away.

GGo is not so special anymore, just another board game like chess. No more right brain nonsense. I suspect AlphaGo was a much worse hit to the Go community than DeepBlue was to the chess community precisely for this reason. Literally out of nowhere. In chess, it was a slow progress from the first chess engines beating beginners till DeepBlue and beyond. In Go, no such slow progress existed.

It was a development in two massive jumps: first brute force engines playing at advanced beginner level, then MC engines playing at a strong amateur level, and then suddenly the superhuman AlphaGo and its successors.

It was too much of a shock. Chess community was by prepared for a possible defeat. Go community in was caught totally off guard. Only for two decades was there a substantial difference in comp performance; until the 90s comps sucked at both. From the early 10s comps were making big strides vs professionals. This is likely an issue related more to hardware improvements than software. At the early stages in program development principles were involved but that was probably fixed "good enough" by Deep Blue in chess.

I don't know when for Go. From then on it was probably more a matter of computers beating the horizon-effect of humans and now just other computers based on pure hardware power and software efficiency to better use that hardware power. Basically just the deeper, cleaner you calculate, the better you are. Related to AZ, that horizon-effect seems in play against SF.

Time after time SF grabs material or wasted tempo and gets a lousy position that even I can see. Apparently calculating that it can defend and get away with it.

And then 10 moves later, surprise! Maybe the way to see the difference between software dominance over machine dominance is to give the underdog a time advantage. What would be the result of a top GM playing a top program with human 25, machine 3? Or to prove AZ's program is so superior, giving SF some fair time edge, whatever that would be? See Fig. There are 2 ways of doing this: 1. Provide the software that is running in less capable hardware equally powerful hardware.

Reduce the allowed executing time of the software running in the more capable hardware so that both sets of software in a given amount of time can perform a similar number of operations. DeepMind did the latter. AlphaZero, as demonstrated, outscored Stockfish by a substantial margin in a match when both engines had the same amount of time and executed in their respective hardware.

When AlphaZero's time was cut by factors of 3 and 10 AlphaZero still won the match but, as expected, by less substantial margins. When AlphaZero's time was cut by a factor of 30 Stockfish outperformed it somewhat, and when AlphaZero's time was cut by a factor of Stockfish outperformed it substantially, by about the same margin that AlphaZero outscored Stockfish when both engines had the same amount of time.

No question in my mind which engine would have come out on top in a match if each engine was executing in systems with comparable hardware performance capability. Ironically the 'sensible' approach of the narrator in the video is as wishy washy as ever. I'm now trying to abort variations from the first 4 move K tree. With the intention to create a sensible opening table base for the first 4 moves.

Let's begin with 1. Qg4 Ng6 5. Qg3 Nc6 7. I do not think self-learning AI techniques use any type of gradient anything, because those all require a model connecting a result to the system parameters eg evaluation heuristics and to the choice selection.

Nor even does a self-learning algorithm optimize anything. It is more akin to successive approximation. That is to say, it is satisfied with a better move and does not ever seek the "best" one. What these systems actually do is to generate random outputs and test the result. The clever part is to associate results with past actions, and then adjust the probability distribution governing the future selections of action in each starting position. This is the basic idea, but it can be overlaid by some generalizations concerning the starting position that are equivalent to themes.

The system can also be coupled to heuristics so that instead of selecting individual moves, they might select parameters in an evaluation function. The simplest example of that which I can think of is simply to encode what any good chess player knows: there are situations in which knight is better than bishop, but it is not always easy to know when one of those situations exists, or to what extent.

Infants, animals and even primitive but multi-celled organisms learn this way, so that is why such learning is sometimes termed "biologically-inspired".
